Cedar Dreams' #1 beginnings was a Michigan white cedar tree. The tree was harvested and delivered to my Amish neighbors where it was sawn into 2 x 6 and 4 x 4 boards. I then cut and glued the 2 x 6 boards into a queen size headboard and footboard.
Several odd sizes and shapes of 1" cedar pieces were glued to the head and footboard to create a three dimensional appearance.
The carving began at this point. I began with no set pattern or plan. I just attempted to maintain balance and eye appeal as I carved. I ate away at the cedar with a rough-in tool and then used a three step sanding process until the wood appeared polished.
The top 15" of the bed posts were carved and sanded similar to the foot and headboards.
The side rails were cut and sanded.
I then assembled and hand rubbed the bed with six coats of polyurethane.
Cedar Dreams #1 is now ready for human inhabitants.
